Life with a two year old.

*Don't read this if you don't want to hear about Daphne's boring potty schedule. You've been warned.

Two year olds not only have a TON to learn in this crazy age of life, but they also insist on doing it all on their own. Thus, the terrible twos. Some people say 3 and 4 is hard too and sometimes even harder. I can agree on some accounts (ahem... Makiah...), but really the fact that these two year olds are put through so much just makes it, well, terrible. Poor things. Poor moms. And dads. Goodness. Temper tantrums are a huge part of our lives around here (for all three girls (yes I said three, me too)). Daphne is, well, two. Makiah is, well, Makiah. And me? Every now and then I loose it too ;) But Daphne is the hardest to handle in the temper tantrum area right now. We are working through it, trying not to give in to stop the crying and trying to teach why things happen the way they do. Daphne is sweet and after a good cry she will share again and say sorry. We love her.

A few days after Daphne threw away her binkies she was still doing awesome with nap time. I let her nap in Makiah's bed to see if she would actually sleep without her crib. She did great! So we converted her crib to a toddler bed (yeay!). She still naps every day and has not come out of her room during a nap once. Whew! It's been so nice.

No binky, check. No crib, check. No diapers?

This is not what it looks like. I won't say I'm potty training... Because I'm not. This is all her idea so I'm just playing along. What else do you do when a kid refuses to wear a diaper?

This is how the first day went...

Daph woke up, insisted that she wears underwear. I had some shopping to do so I bought Dora underwear instead of diapers. We get home, she puts on a pair, sits on the potty a few times and then wets herself (expected, I'm totally ok with accidents. She needs to learn somehow). Then came nap time = diaper. She woke up with an attitude, didn't want underwear, wore a diaper the rest of the day.

Second day... Woke up, asked for underwear, peed I'm the potty(!), stayed dry all morning, wore a pull up because we had somewhere we had to go, sat on the potty while we were out, had an accident, wore a diaper at nap time, refused to take it off after. Again, she had an attitude when she woke up. No underwear.

This morning she went in the potty again!! But then we had to leave the house, so yeah. Diaper. well see how moody she is when she wakes up today...

I totally know I should take away the diapers completely, stay home for 2-3 days and not use pull ups during the day. But I'm not potty training so it doesn't matter :) hehehe.

When I trained Evan I started when he was two (when everyone potty trained, so I thought). I pushed him. I studied every method out there. I tried every trick. A year and a half later he was potty trained... but he still had a hard time, even through Kindergarten he struggled with a few things. With Makiah I didn't push. I waited and pretty much she begged me to potty train her. I kinda did what I am doing with Daph and she taught herself. Within a couple weeks she was good to go and never struggled.

I love what I learned from the two times I potty trained before. I learned to ignore the pressure from other moms (even if it comes unintentionally its there). I can potty train when and how I want. Mommy debates don't affect me anymore. I'm in no rush to have her potty trained by a certain age and I see no reason do try and do it in a day (or two or three). There are great methods out there, and I know a lot of people who swear by them... but they aren't for everyone (especially this over anxious mom). Daphne is interested, so as long as we're at home she can do what she wants. I'm sure at one point it will either click for her like it did for Makiah, or I can take a week off from life to get her trained quickly, if I have to. For now I'm ok, and she is having fun not potty training.

Something new

I'm sad that I've been a horrible blogger this past year. It used to be something I loved to do to pass time, it really help my sanity most days. So I thought I'd try something new, I'm going to blog from my phone. You'll be seeing a lot of phone photos, but that's better than nothing... Right? Some posts might just be a picture and a quick description, just something to get my blog going again. Here we go...

Evan's tooth has been loose for about a week and today it looks like it will be coming out any minute along with the one next to it. Its his first loose tooth so he is pretty anxious for it to come out. Last week he asked me when it would fall out, I said I didn't know. He got upset and said "give me a date mom!" Ha. This kid thinks everything is on a precise schedule... Just like him.

Today we are just relaxing and I'm loving it. We've done this a lot this winter, but for some reason it is just something I needed today. No pressure to get anything done, just having fun with the kids.

Here is a picture of Evan with all his baby teeth and some randomness of my girls. Happy three day weekend (:

Sledding

I'm posting photos way out of order... but that's okay. This was the last day of winter break and the last day of this snow :) We went sledding just in time!

First time sledding for Daphne! It may not look like she was super thrilled about this, but she LOVED it :)

The hill was small enough that we didn't get tired going up and down over and over, and it was big enough to have some fun! The kids have been wanting to go back ever since, but we haven't had enough snow :(

First steps

I am having flash backs. Can Makiah really be 4? Because really, she should look like this....

Daphne Walking from Jessica Bateman on Vimeo.

Here and here are the videos of Makiah doing the same thing way back when. Now it's Daphne's turn. I LOVE it when babies learn to walk. They are such cute little people walking around, it's just adorable.

This morning Daphne took 7 steps at a time and then 10. She seems pretty proud of herself too. I am excited for her, this is so fun!

Daph at 7 months

It seems every post is about Daphne. One day I'll post pictures of the rest of us and you'll all be in shock to see how much Evan and Kiah have grown up ;) I have a little extra time that hopefully will go towards blogging about the kids, so soon enough I'll fill you in on what's going on around here.

Lots has been happening this past month with Daphne. She is changing into a mobile baby who can't hold still. Just changing her diaper is a challenge :) She can now...

Crawl (not just scoot)
Sit up
Transition from crawling to sitting and sitting to crawling
Pull herself to stand

The first time Daphne pulled herself to stand she was next to the bath tub. She loves the water a little too much :) I thought Evan helped her up, but then she did it again. We lowered her mattress in her crib and then she started standing in there too.

Daphne will sometimes start to cry when I leave the room. Though not every time, thank goodness. She still likes other people, but if I leave her with them she most likely will start to cry. If I put her down in one room I have to distract her with something before I can leave. This is all bad timing seeing that we are leaving to Utah soon to see family. Hopefully we can break her of any fears she has of being away from Mom.

Daphne also has a tooth coming in, but she has been handling that well. I haven't noticed a change in her temperament, which is wonderful... teething can be so hard and so far she is doing well. She sleeps just fine, some nights she sleeps through the night and others she wakes up early for a bottle.

I took these photos at a friends house... that's why it might not look familiar :) I made the skirt Daphne is wearing, I made a bunch for her and Kiah. Kiah refuses to wear shorts so it is nice to have a bunch of play skirts for them to wear :)

This is Daph's cool yoga trick that she loves to do for us...

I don't know why, but Daphne doesn't care to eat solids, she is just fine drinking her bottle. I think she wants to eat when she sees us eating, but when I feed her cereal or baby food she just can't figure it out. I think it is just because of her tongue thrust, her tongue pushes out anything I put in. She won't even open her mouth for me to put the spoon in. So I get her to smile and stick the spoon in. Sometimes she swallows, but she mostly just spits it out. We've been trying almost everyday, but I don't push it. She'll figure it out soon enough.

Little stinker and her tongue poking out...

Trick her into smiling...

And show her how yummy the food is...

It's not so bad after all...

One month now

Daphne is such a good baby. She is very content and calm. She has a very consistent schedule, which I like... It just makes my life a little more easier and predictable. She eats every 3-4 hours and during the night she goes right back to sleep after she eats. She is starting to stay awake more during the day and interacts with us a little bit now. This week she has been smiling so much. Mostly when she hears us talking to her. It is very sweet :) Daphne hardly ever cries. Mostly just when she is hungry and she fusses a little when she needs a diaper change. When she is tired, as long as she is swaddled and has her binky, she will usually fall asleep on her own. I can even jump in the shower while she is awake and she stays happy and quiet the whole time. I really, REALLY hope that she doesn't change. I love my baby!

Daphne had her 1 month check up today and she is now 9 lbs 13 oz and is 22 1/4 inches long. She is healthy and happy!

As I mentioned before, Daphne was blessed on Sunday by her Dad. She looked SO beautiful and so I had to take some pictures (naturally...) of her in her dress. (It is always takes some time to get a baby ready for pictures... I got her all dressed up today and then she decided to poop. So I undressed her so her dress wouldn't get dirty and changed her. Dressing a baby, especially in tights takes some effort so this all took a bit of time. By the time I had her dressed again she was sound asleep. She was so tired.(Perfect!!))

I am finally feeling like myself again and it is so nice. I am not in the shape I was before pregnancy, but that will take some time getting back into my routine and exercising. But I do feel much better than I did two weeks ago... and of course much better than when I was pregnant. Having three kids isn't too much harder... but more work of course. Lucky for me, Daphne is so easy going. Taking care of the older kids is the hard part. I am proud to say that I have made it through two grocery shopping trips with three kids... I survived! But I don't look forward to the next time I have to take them all out at the same time. Life is different, but good. I really love being a mom.

First bath

Daphne hardly ever cries. She has been such a good baby. She is on a consistent schedule and is a very good sleeper. She does wake up every 3-4 hours during the night, but she goes right back to sleep. I really, REALLY hope she stays like this... but she still is a newborn, so there is no telling how things might change.

After 2 weeks her umbilical cord finally fell off, so we were able to give her a real bath. She hated it. This was the most I ever heard her cry...

One calm moment...

It took her awhile to forgive me.
